5 November Guy Fawkes

Being born in the 60’s and growing up through the 70’s and 80’s there was never an issue with celebrating Guy Fawkes. I actually don’t think we even knew the history behind the day.

It was just a day filled with excitement and anticipation of what was to come. My Father used to work in Johannesburg and every year on the 5th November arrive home with a huge box of fireworks and packets of crackers.

The excitement grew as it got dark, family and friends used to arrive to join the fun. My Mother would always make sure there were a few packets of sweets and enough cold drink for all.

Fireworks on Guy fawkes

We would have huge fun setting off the various fireworks and shooting crackers. The noise in the neighborhood was deafening and lasted for hours.

Animals and Guy Fawkes

Not quite sure why we didn’t think of our pets getting scared during the firework displays. We had a Maltese that used to share the excitement of the night. Barking, wagging his tail and running around with us. He did not seem to be frightened at all, maybe he was used to the madness.

The dogs in the neighborhood used to bark but we never thought anything of it. There was no social media at the time, heck there was no internet and TV only came to us in 1975.

Possibly the lack of communication hid the truth of the poor animals during the Guy Fawkes celebrations. Now in an era filled with communications like Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp there seems to be major issues.

Animals are being hurt, traumatized and escaping from their homes in an effort to get away from the noise. I have seen some photos of pets being hurt and its quite disturbing. I am just sad that I was guilty of causing this harm in the past, does it help to say “I wasn’t aware”?

Live and Let Live

I live my life by this simple philosophy “Live and Let Live”. If I do something that you don’t approve of but it doesn’t affect your life, then that’s your problem. But if my actions cause your animals harm and distress then I will stop the action – Simple!

We as a family have not set off fireworks on Guy Fawkes or any other night for years now and I urge you not to either. Lets try and make a harmonious community where everyone is calm, happy and able to enjoy their lives.
