So you have been thinking about starting a Facebook Group and being a Facebook Administrator. You might think its all fun and games having a public group. Well in many ways it is but just be careful of the pitfalls.

Genealogy and Family History

Over the past few years I have had a keen interest in Genealogy. Learning about the families and the history of the families that contributed to me being here. It has been an interesting task, difficult but rewarding at the same time. On the Norval side of things it has been easier as many people sharing the surname seem to have an interest in the family history. I have got quite a bit of info from them and from people contacting me after visiting my website.

Botes Genealogy

My Mothers side has not been so easy. Trying to find info on the Botes surname and history has been quite confusing at times. People that have done the research seem to want money to share their info … Seems fair to get some compensation for all their hard work but I ain’t paying. So I am left scratching around.

Low cost Barcode Scanner HR1250

I had the opportunity to use and test a low cost barcode scanner over the last few days. The scanner is the Newland HR1250-70 Anchoa barcode scanner with a USB cable.

Stock Taking Barcode Scanner

Shop owners often ask how they can simplify their Stock Taking procedures using a barcode scanner. I will try my best to explain how it works and how it makes stock taking easier.

Using a Portable Data Terminal

A Portable Data Terminal like the Cipherlab 8200 or 8001 is ideal. For the purpose of explanation I will refer to the Cipherlab 8200. The 8001 works exactly the same, the 8001 is just the entry level product and has a smaller memory capacity.

Customer Service in South Africa

After having to deal with a few companies and institutions over the last few months I have come to the conclusion that the Customer Service levels have dropped steeply over the last few years. Its such a sad situation on so many levels.

Many employees and customers alike blame the situation on a lack of training. I disagree to a certain extent with this statement. Let me explain my own customer service growth and thoughts.

High debt leads to sequestration

This is not an advert like the hundreds of ads out there promising to get you free of debt but rather my true life event before and after 2008.

We had our own company pre 2008 and were living a life of luxury, three motor vehicles in the garage, a large house with a bond of R1.600 000 and things were going well. Friends were plenty and parties and braai’s virtually every weekend. When I look back now I see that our lives were driven by money and possessions. At the same time we had debt … plenty of debt! But this wasn’t a problem as we could cover all our installments with a smile.

First Incident

The first incident happened in 2007 which gave us a bit of a knock, we received an order for numerous PC operating system packages to a value of over R100 000, cant remember the exact amount. I personally collected the packages from the supplier and delivered them to an address in Houghten which seemed totally legitimate and received a bank drawn cheque from the client as arranged. Later the same afternoon we received another order from the same client for laptops and other bits and pieces with the same payment arrangements, orders were placed. The following morning our bank informed us that the cheque we paid in was a forgery and no such account existed, what a complete shock!!

How to install the Cipherlab 8001

A short tutorial on how to install the Cipherlab 8001 and 8200 on your computer. This covers the USB kit, the RS232 model is slightly simpler.

Install the USB Drivers

First download USB Drivers (CP210x_VCP_Windows_v6.7) and install. This will install the USB Driver needed to make the Cipherlab 8001 communicate with your PC via the USB Port. It creates a virtual com port which we will get the number of shortly.
